He was popularly regarded as having been one of the most versatile, talented, stylish and popular actors in the Kannada film industry. He also acted in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. He donned lead roles in romantic, action, emotional, music, comedy and dramatic films have been widely popular. He adopted the name Vishnuvardhan at the insistence of Puttanna Kanagal, who directed his maiden film Naagarahaavu. Early Life Born in Mysore, Karnataka in a brahmin family to the H.L. Narayana Rao and Kamakshamma. His father was an artist, music composer and a film script writer. His family made a living in Mysore's Chamundipuram. In those days, his father was well known for his collection of musical instruments. His sister Rama Ramachandra, was a Kathak dancer at the Mysore Palace. His siblings are, Rama Ramachandra (dancer), Indirani Prabhakar (Principal, MES college), Jayashree Gopalaswamy, N. Ravi Kumar (play director, actor, retd. ITI), and Poornima Vyasulu (Management Consultant in Human resources). He did his primary schooling in Mysore's Gopalswamy School and his middle school in Bangalore's Kannada Madari School. He undertook High School and his degree in the National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore Career Vishnuvardhan started his career with the national award winning movie Vamshavruksha directed by Girish Karnad but Naagarahaavu directed by Puttanna Kanagal, in which he played lead role for the first time, made him an overnight star. Three and half decades of career and a variety of popular roles in more than 200 films speak high about his caliber as an actor. Whether it was his debut role as a rebellious and hot-headed young man, or a sensitive lover, or the likeable 'Captain' (to Ramesh's Vice-Captain), Vishnuvardhan proved a versatile actor. Many scripts seemed to be written around his on-screen persona, and the diversity of his fan base is a measure of his talent and appeal. Young men admired his physical presence, big heart and dialogue delivery. To more mature, middle class audiences his roles provided dependable, decent and solid entertainment, in a Kannada film industry desperately short of quality and marquee names. Some of his all-time hits are Naagarahaavu, Muthina Haara, Hombisilu, Sahasa Simha, Bandhana, Naagara Hole, Nishkarsha, Yajamana, Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu & Apthamitra. While shooting for Muthina Haara movie, Vishnu performed a dangerous parachute dive without a double and missed death by a whisker. He ventured into parallel cinema and acted in movies like Harakeya Kuri (based on Dr. Chandrashekar Kambar's novel with same title). Vishnu started to wear the "Kadha" from 1980. He first wore it in the movie Simhajodi and this remained with him. It was given to him at a Gurudwara in Bidar. It is believed that the huge fan following for him made Vishnuvardhan not want to deviate from his "star value" and "image". He continued to don the roles of macho hero and the ideal lover husband. National Award is a godsend for AB Corp: Amitabh Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan says, "For AB Corp this has been godsend and we are really, really happy for a company that has been through some terrible times," Amitabh, 67, told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. I think this is a fantastic endorsement of its capability of wanting to get back. Which is why I give a lot of credit to Abhishek because it was his decision and it was his work that made AB Corp produce this film." Amitabh bagged his fourth national honour at the 57th National Film Awards Wednesday for his performance as a 13-year-old progeria patient Auro in R. Balki's Paa, which also won for best makeup, best supporting actress and best Hindi film. ![]() Paa is his son Abhishek's first production venture made under the AB Corp banner. An elated Amitabh said: "I am so honoured that both Abhishek and me will be there personally to receive the award from the president of India. "We want to continue making films. We were very hesitant because we've had so many failures in the past but with this success, yes, we are inspired...We will continue to make films in the regional cinema." "I am very happy for Balki because it was his vision. I felt happy for Abhishek because he took the decision to produce the film. I didn't know that we had won four awards and obviously this is the icing on the cake. So very, very happy for everyone involved in it," he added. "Since its very inception, AB Corp has been making films in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and we will continue to do that. We have sponsored films that are made in Bengali and we will continue this process. There are various scripts that are coming in from both Marathi producers and directors and we are studying that." While actors his age shy away from experimenting, this star has always managed to drop jaws by doing the unthinkable. "What can I say? I just consider myself very fortunate that there are people who still want to test me and throw challenges to me. I am very happy because as an actor you are always looking forward to doing something different, new and exciting. "And I am really, really grateful to the almighty for this streak of luck and good fortune that there are people who still want to work with me," he said. How does Big B judge himself? "I think every day is a new craft that we need to learn. In the creative field one should never be satisfied. The moment I would say that I am satisfied, that would be the end of my career. For an artist that's a terrible thing to live in. So I hope that there is something new for me to learn in the years to come or in the days to come," he said. Amitabh had earlier received the National Award for Saat Hindustani, Agneepath and Black. He is a legend and in his 41-year-long innings he has been honoured with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. What does the megastar have next in his kitty to surprise his audiences and admirers? "I don't know what they will expect. Let's see what kind of roles are coming. Obviously we can't repeat another Auro, but let's see... the world is full of surprises," he said. "Balki and me, we keep meeting. We have three or four ideas which we want to do next. I think some of them are very exciting and different," added the legend, who starts shooting next month for Rajkumar Santoshi's film. RCB in Trouble without Kallis Durban, Sept 18: Putting up a brave front after facing a humiliating 8-wicket loss against the South Australian Redbacks, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble highlighted the absence of Jacques Kallis from the playing XI and admitted that his batsmen fell short by 20 runs while posting the target. In a media interaction, Anil Kumble termed Ross Taylor’s dismissal as the turning point in the match. On having done his homework on South Australian Redbacks No, I think we had done all the homework. Whatever you do in the backroom it is important to execute those plans. I think we didn’t execute those plans in the middle. We could have bowled better as it was a wicket where you could not play the shots if the ball is bowled in the right place. PK [Praveen Kumar] did it early on. Maybe a couple of early wickets could have brought us in the game. Having said that, they [Redbacks] played exceptionally well. On missing the services of Jacques Kallis Yeah, I mean he is a big player for us. If someone like Kallis is not in the playing XI then you have to replace him with two people because he is an opening batsman and he gives you four overs. It was a big loss for us and hopefully he will recover and be fit for Sunday. On the dropped half-chances In hindsight you can say that [we missed a few] but those were not easy catches. Somedays it sticks and there are days when it doesn’t. We were going well but lost few early wickets. But then Ross Taylor really got us going and probably his wicket was critical. On the Redbacks’ effort in the field You expect that from South Australia. I think we needed 20 more runs on that pitch. On the opening partnership between Harris and Klinger Yeah, I think we didn’t get a partnership going other than Dillon du Preez and Cameron White. If someone gets a partnership like that upfront then it is difficult for any new bowler to come and attack. Having said that there was not much pressure with only 7.5 runs per over. Maybe another 15-20 runs would have made the difference. On Dale Steyn’s injury No, he [Dale Steyn] is fine. It is probably that he went to knock the ball and got a strain in the elbow. It is just one of the things that happened on the ground. On Sunday’s game against Mumbai Indians Sunday’s match is very crucial for both the teams. We know each other very well and hopefully we can win that and then qualify for the semi-finals. If we lose then it is a tough call. On his field placing I think there was no issue with the field placing. There were nine fielders on the field and I wish I had two more. We were not consistent with our lengths. Credit to them - they batted well and seemed to be in a good nick.

CSK v Victorian Bushrangers
What Group A leaders Super Kings take on the resurgent Victorian Bushrangers to stake their claim for a semi-final spot. When Saturday, September 18, 2010. The game begins at 5.30 pm, SAST. Where St. George’s Park, Port Elizabeth About the teams The Chennai Super Kings are on a dream run at the moment. Everything new that they try is working to perfection but it doesn’t take a lot to gain or lose momentum in T20 cricket. As robust as they come, the CSK batting line-up looks impenetrable on paper, with only opener Matthew Hayden looking out of sorts, while their bowling is versatile and penetrative. MS Dhoni has hardly had a hit in the competition and that shows the strength in depth that CSK possess. Fresh from a win against the Central Stags, the Victorian Bushrangers will be hoping to defeat CSK to keep their chances alive for a place in the semi-final stage. The Aussie club, regarded as one of the favourites to win the competition, are slowly getting into the grove. And opener Aaron Finch displayed what perseverance can achieve against the Stags. It will require a similar effort from the Bushrangers if they want to turn over the Super Kings. Key players Ever since Aussie ace Doug Bollinger entered the CSK fold, the IPL outfit have looked like a different team. The 29-year-old fits in perfectly with the rest of the CSK thoroughbreds. With pace and accuracy in abundance, Bollinger is CSK’s talisman with the ball. And he’ll be eager to get one over his fellow countrymen come September 18th. The Bushrangers have their own Aussie opening bowler who is also a handful to face. Peter Siddle might be returning from injury but he proved he is ready to regain his top form with a two-wicket haul against the Central Stags. The 25-year-old fast bowler’s inconsiderate bounce and unpredictable pace gives the Bushrangers a new dimension. What Next? A win for the Super Kings and they are through to the semis with a match in hand. A loss will throw Group A wide open, with the Bushrangers and CSK both on the same number of points with a game each to go. |
